Poems that bring before us a living and vibrant world

The present book is a facsimile reprint of the first edition of the first book by John Clare, the "Northamptonshire Peasant" poet who created a sensation when he burst upon the English literary scene in 1820. It was published in an edition of 1000 copies which sold out within two months; a second edition of 2000 copies was exhausted before the end of the year, and a reprint was required a year later.
Clare's success is easy to understand. He was a man of the people and sprung, not from the sterile Neo-Classical culture of the British upper classes, but from the still vital and living native tradition of the English folk.
Also, as a farm laborer, he was intimately involved with the earth and its manifold creatures. His poems bring before us a densely populated living and vibrant world, the natural world which most of us have completely lost touch with today and which, at some deep level, we sorely miss.
If people were cameras we might say that Clare's lens aperture was set at its widest. In other words, his unique sensibility allowed far more of the world into his mind that normally gets into ours. And it is this rich and glorious world that he presents to us as a gift in his poems.
You're just going to have to read him to see what I mean. And a good place to start would be with this book which brings him before us as his contemporaries first experienced him so that we can see him, as it were, through their eyes. Later you could move on to explore the manuscript-based texts of Clare that are described in my Listmania List: "Make John Clare the greatest poetic discovery of your life!"
I think that once you start reading him you'll find that is what he will become.

Overpriced and Not as expected

I had intended to give this as a gift, but when it arrived I found that it was merely a bound and poor quality copy of a previous printing (that had been marked up). I thought I would keep it myself but have read the first 2 poems, and am not impressed.
