The tough, cunning brothers, who endured hundreds of porn-related arrests, were frequently in court to protect their right to be purveyors of live sex shows and flesh flicks. Both brothers used cocaine, and in 1991 Jim, described here as a loving father, snapped and fatally shot Artie, an obnoxious, dangerous drunk and sex addict who physically and emotionally abused a network of worshipful women competing to give him master-slave sex. Convicted of manslaughter instead of the prosecutor's charge of first-degree murder, he could spend less than three years in prison. In 1991, the killing of Artie Mitchell by his older brother Jim stunned San Francisco. After all, the city's famous, or rather infamous, citizens had been innovative pornographers whose classic Behind the Green Door transformed the adult film industry and whose O'Farrell Theatre was the "Carnegie Hall of Public Sex." What led these colorful, unpredictable brothers to their tragically violent end? Journalist McCumber attempts to find the answers, but his book is an awkward mishmash of two separate stories. On the personal level, it is a classic Cain and Abel tale of the responsible older brother tired of taking care of an abusive sibling addicted to sex, drugs, and alcohol. On a broader front, the Mitchells' story symbolizes the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. Because McCumber tries to cram in so much material, parts of his book has a rushed, sketchy feel , while other sections (especially the chapter discussing Artie's relationship with women) bore the reader with excessive details. McCumber's occasional Hunter Thompson-type prose is distracting and weakens his book. Still, as the Mitchells knew, sex sells, so there probably will be demand.

Not written, transcripted

I managed until page 125 or so and couldn't read anymore. Sorry. The subject is interesting although somewhat "light" on the cultural revolution at the end of the 60s. What stopped me was the writing : this book is not written, it reads like a transcript from some audio tape. I never read anything so poorly written.

Dreadful writing

David McCumber, now at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, was an editor at the San Francisco Chronicle in the mid-1980s, where the late Hunter S. Thompson made a brief, unsuccessful stint as a columnist. McCumber knew the Mitchells and the O'Farrell Theatre; this book, therefore, perhaps was inevitable. McCumber is also a far better editor than writer, if this book is any indication.

The Mitchells, according to their biographers, saw an opportunity to make big money in porn and did just that. To the biographers, Jim and Artie were "Okie outlaw pornographers" who hired their good ol' boys from childhood as important members of their porn empire. The O'Farrell Theatre was (and remains) a mirrored house of sleaze where bikini-clad strippers hustled greenbacks from customers too shy and ugly to get girls any other way. The Mitchells made millions and spent them just as fast on women, cars, parties, drugs and so on until Artie, crazy from too much for too long, got out of control and everyone said to Jim, "Do something about him, will you?" The whole sordid tale was told much better by Hubner.

Besides a general introduction to EJBs, the new edition of this book excels at highlighting the differences between the EJB 1.0 and 1.1 standards. Sample code is provided for both versions. For deployment, EJB 1.1 now relies on XML to define all bean resources and dependencies. For every sample bean, the author provides the XML, as well as the old-style Java code for EJB 1.0. The best EJB book

I've read two EJB books and this is, by far, the best one. I started with Ed Romans book, which I never finished because I quickly realized the author knows very little about distributed computing. I found refuge in the Monson-Haefel book, which I found to be concise, detailed, and extremely well written. Richard Monson-Haefel is man who obviously knows his business. The book starts out with a basic chapter on distributed computing. I didn't need it, but it was probably the best introduction to the subject I've ever read. Novices will love it. The rest of the book gives you a unique insight to the inner workings of EJB servers while keeping the language straightforward so that everyone can understand it. Everything is covered including entity, session, transactions, and J2EE. I give this book my highest recommendation.

Outstanding Coverage of a Large Subject

I started out knowing very little about EJB's when I picked up this book. I'm happy to say I wasn't disappointed!

The first three chapters give a 10,000 foot view about the role of EJB's in J2EE. Bean lifecycles are covered, container interaction, deploytment processes, etc. is all covered in a general and friendly manner. A little bit of code is presented to illustrate key points and help you start thinking about how to write code.

The chapters following really drill down into the guts of entity, session (state and stateless), and message driven EJBs. Simple code examples are presented and taken apart, with detailed explanation about why certain things are the way they are, and how things work. Outstanding theory here! You get down into the nitty gritty about deployment descriptors, state diagrams, the works.

There are also nice reference Appendices providing state transition diagrams, API references, etc.

What impressed me most about this book is the author's careful distinction between EJB 1.1 and EJB2.0 specifications, including code samples of each, and the raw level of detail about how beans work.

The bad part about this book is it assumes you know a lot of other fundamental technologies such as XML, JNDI, and JMS. I highly recommend you have references available on these technologies during reading if you're trying to learn the big picture at the same time. People who are really into code examples and not theory may also be a little disappointed by the simplicity of the examples given.

All in all a great buy!

Outstanding Book!!!

This is a review of the fourth edition which covers EJB 2.1 and EJB 2.0. While there is a newer edition covering EJB 3.0, I specifically needed to buy the older version since I had to learn EJB 2.0 for my application. This is truly an outstanding book. Very rarely have I seen a book of this level of detail and quality at the same time. The author presents the topics in very clear tone, so it is easy to follow. The author does repeat same concepts sometimes but I found it to be helpful to remember. There are tons of examples spread through out many chapters. The JBoss workbook provided in the second part of the book is by itself worth the price of this book. Clear instructions and explanations are provided as part of this workbook. I tested all examples in the book in JBoss 4.x and with a couple of exceptions noted here, they run fine. My only disappointment with this book relates to the chapters on web services - the explanation was not good enough to follow nor was I able to get the examples to run in JBoss. However, this is not a book on web services, so I guess it is ok. I highly recommend this book to any one who wants to learn EJB's especially by testing the many examples given in this book. Kudos to the authors for doing an excellent job.

Awesome quick reference for resume builders!

I absolutely love that this book is packed with quick references and answers questions that have long since been in debate in the world of resume writing. I have used this book to assist coworkers and friends with constructing or improving their resumes and found the advice contained therein to be both valuable and concise. I have never seen a resume book that advises to add in a "branding statement," but that was an awesome little tidbit that added the perfect personal touch. I assisted my boss with his resume for a corporate leadership "grooming" interview and the quote he chose for his branding statement was brought up by both the executives that interviewed him - they loved it! Denbigh really directs you on how to sell yourself and your skills, and the personal touches get your resume noticed instead of tossed into the recycle bin. My only thought is let your resume take the cake - you'll make a fantastic one using the easily accessible advice in this book, but allow your cover letter to enhance, not overshadow, your resume.

Annie Laurie Gaylor is co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundaiton. With her mother Anne Gaylor, she co-founded the Foundaiton in 1978, a national association of freethinkers (atheists and agnostics) working to protect the constitutional principle of the separation between church and state. She has a journalism degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1980). She is editor of Freethought Today, the Foundation's newspaper. She has also edited Women Without Superstition: No Gods - No Masters (1997), the first anthology of women freethinkers. she lives in Madison, Wisconsin, and is married to Dan Barker. They have one daughter.

Woe to the Women

This book was well written and was fluid in it's presentation I don't think much was left to wonder about the bible and it's poor treatment of women. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because there were several examples of stretching the meanings a little far which made the authors look overly reactive,in my opinion, but there was probably about 4 examples of that compared to a whole book of many examples of things that were absolutely right. This book shows why women have had an up hill battle for their rights for so long.

Excellent and Accurate

This book is very thorough. Christians who consider themselves experts (but won't read the book) could learn a lot from it. For example, in response to Tinker's four star review, Arden (who considers himself a knowledgeable Christian scholar) lectures her on the Adam and Eve account in Genesis and accuses her of putting her "own slant on" Scripture when she says womankind was blamed for the fall of man. Arden gets Genesis right - that only Adam was directly warned, and had he read "Woe to the Woman," he would have found that's the way Annie Laurie covered it too (second and third pages of the first chapter (Creation - Eve was framed). But Tinker is right that womankind is held accountable by the scriptures: Here is last paragraph from that chapter: "The myth of Adam and Eve is thrown back into the faces of women countless times by the New Testament writers. Timothy epitomizes the way in which the story was exploited in order to oppress and blame women: 'Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.'" 1 Timothy 2:11-14.

So, you have one fellow who tells a reviewer who has actually read the book, "Tinker, you have a LOT of reading to do!" (when it appears to be the other way around). And you have another reviewer whose one star review has nothing at all to do with the book, but is an inaccurate, vicious, personal attack.

Not for mature Believers called to 5 fold ministry!

This book is for a new, baby Believer. If you have intimacy with God and are a mature Believer that's been called to the five-fold ministry, then save your time and money. If you're a new Believer and looking for a basic teaching, then this might be helpful. Topics include practicing His presence (take Jesus with you), speaking in tongues, reading a chapter of Proverbs each day, etc. Personally, if you're looking for teachings like that, I'd recommend Joseph Prince. There's a condemning tone to this book (focused on the fruit and the flesh). Better to focus on Jesus, and He'll take care of the fruit and the flesh! Joseph Prince is great about stiring up LIFE in you, and his ministry is a wonderful stream from which to drink.... Use caution here, Beloved. Ask Abba Papa before you purchase!

Very good but a serious error

This was a great book and very encouraging to one experiencing both the thrill and passion of the prophetic calling. However, there is a serious doctrinal error in the book and that is that people can hold all five ministry offices. There was only one man who ever walked the earth who held all five offices and that was the Lord Jesus Christ. I have witnessed this error leading to a cult type mentality within a church when some, in error, felt their pastor held all five offices. Fortunately the pastor knew better and the error was exposed and corrected.

This prophet knows what she is talking about and I'm happy the purchase was not in vain! I thought it would go further into the training of Elijah's prophets, where God spoons feed them Hismelf, but overall, I was blessed!

Helpful info for potential buyers

This is not the 2015 edition as listed by Amazon, it is the original 1989 edition. The entire book is handwritten pages, looks like someone's class notes, which makes it difficult to read and decipher. Returned for both these reasons, there are other more helpful books on the subject out there.

This is THE book I have been looking for...without even knowing it really existed.

Ok, so I am in the minority here. I LOVE THIS BOOK. Yes, it's handwritten. There is not a bit of type anywhere inside the covers. However , the handwriting is like that block architecture writing you see on blueprints. Very precise and pretty to very easy to read. Perhaps its because in massage school I spent hours pouring over The Anatomy Coloring book which is written in the same style and I am used to it, but if you can get past the type, you will be so glad you hung in there. It's like a good foreign movie with subtitles. The content is so good that after a while, not only do you not mind, but you don't even notice you are reading something you are not used to.

This book lists many of the everyday acute and chronic conditions we see as practitioners and gives you examples of what it looks like in the iris. Then, not only does it help you identify, but it gives you more insight as to causes, what other organs may also be affected , indications, symptoms, wholistic relationships and suggested treatment options. This is a definite desktop reference for a practicing iridologist. The only thing that would have been helpful would be either a table of contents or an index. Not necessary as it's all in alpha order, but would have been nice. I think I will get the coloring book now that I see how awesome this book is. Look past the block lettering. It's just different. Not worse...different.

I really don't like the illustrations because they are hard to interpret. There is too much information in each page so it looks very cluttered.
