About the Author
Rowan K. Flad is Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University. He has received grants from the Wenner Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, the Luce Foundation, the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation and the American Philosophical Foundation, among others. He has been a traveling lecturer for the Archaeological Institute of America and has published extensively on archaeology in China in many edited volumes and journals, including Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Current Anthropology, The Holocene, Antiquity, the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology, the Journal of Field Archaeology, Asian Perspectives, the Journal of East Asian Archaeology, the Bulletin of the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Kaogu and Nanfang Minzu Kaogu. He co-edited a book on specialization in the series Archaeological Papers of the American Anthropological Association, and is the author of Salt Production and Social Hierarchy in Ancient China: An Archaeological Investigation of Specialization in China's Three Gorges, published by Cambridge University Press in 2011.

Pochan Chen is Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at National Taiwan University. His major research focus is the Neolithic to Han Dynasty of China and Neolithic Taiwan. He has published several papers in journals such as Asian Perspectives, Bianjiang Minzu Kaogu Yu Minzu Kaoguxue Jikan, Diaro de Campo, Kaogu, Nanfang Minzu Kaogu, Nanfang Wenwu, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Xinshixue and Yanyeshi Yanjiu, and in book sections of Salt Archaeology of China, Volume 1, and Sel, Eau et For�t: D'hier ... About the Author

Charles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of two. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for over fifty years. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

Strictly for the hard-core.

I absolutely enjoyed the insights and the drawings, but it's an oddity on my Bukowski shelf.
RE: Kindle edition - the drawings are included in the digital edition and they are generally well formatted.
I bought the Kindle version and then found a .50 cent copy. Comparing both, I would recommend the kindle version for ease or reading, especially since the letters are generally very short and can be enjoyed during a commute or while killing time in a cafe. I tended to read the letters in the same short, focused burst that I read his poetry. IMHO - I like the Kindle version.

As a hard core Bukowski fan and writer, I was looking forward to this new book. As soon as I opened it, I was disappointed because it mostly contains letters he wrote to others from 1959 to 1993 along with a few reproduced illustrations and posed photos of an older Bukowski. I've read most of Bukowski's sizable collection of letters, published in three earlier books. It was a sometimes interesting but otherwise tedious exercise. His letter writing, while admittedly under the influence, is nowhere near as clear and sharp reading as his poems and short stories.

According to Abel Debritto, CBOW's editor and also a Bukowski biographer, these are letters are unpublished until now. It seems to me the person to whom the letters were addressed (Henry Miller, Fante, Ferlinghetti and others literary notables important to Bukowski's career) are more important here. There's very little about writing in most of the letters. The most germane letter to the book's title doesn't appear until 1983, and the good news is there are more direct references to writing in the years' more concise letters that follow.

Bukowski often sounded off in interviews about writers, writing and the profession. I was hoping to find more of the latter in CBOW rather than "...some of the most passionate letters Bukowski ever wrote, and this volume of correspondence is as easily compelling as any other of his collections." Does Delbritto mean his other books of letter collections or something else? This book, and others like coming forth this year and next are to commemorate what would have been Hank's 95th birthday this year. Instead of buying the repackaged works, I think we'd all be better off remembering him with Black Sparrow book of his poems and bottle of good wine.

Wonderfully raw, chaotic, cathartic, destructive in his creative nature, I have to recognize that reading Bukowski's poetry and his letters is much the same in the sense that I've never read anything like him. I suspect I'm missing some wonderful writers, but at least I have finally caught up with one of those writers I've been meaning to get in touch with. In short, Bukowski doesn't give a damn while giving every damn. How he lived to 74, probably no one knows, but reading these letters, you can see how honest he was even in his cynicism.

This collection of letters worked best for me like his poetry. A little here, a little there, a lot when the mood takes me. In between reads being a rude albeit effective palate cleanser.

He would apologize for being the way he was while insisting he needed to be the way he was. Some of these letters truly sound like the memoirs of a madman while others show a gentle tenderness you wouldn't expect from a dirty old man who is happiest with a cigar stub, some wine, and classical music playing background to the symphony of his typewriter.

I rarely if ever quote many writers/artists/people in general, but I quoted him very recently:

"The only writers who write well are those who must write in order not to go mad." - Charles Bukowski

This rings true in every letter, every poem, and it gives me the hope that as a writer, I'm doing something right by keeping the tradition alive.

About the Author
Thomas Magstadt earned his doctorate at the Johns Hopkins Schools of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He is the author NATIONS AND GOVERNMENTS: COMPARATIVE POLITICS IN REGIONAL PERSPECTIVE, Sixth Edition, (Wadsworth Publishing, 2011), and AN EMPIRE IF YOU CAN KEEP IT: POWER AND PRINCIPLE IN AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY (CQ Press, 2004). He has also published numerous journal articles, policy papers, and op-ed pieces, and is a regular contributor to Nation of Change, an on-line daily newspaper. He has chaired political science departments at Augustana College (Sioux Falls) and the University of Nebraska (Kearney), and has taught at the Thunderbird School, the Air War College, and the University of Missouri--Kansas City. In the 1980s, he served for a time as a foreign intelligence analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency. He was a Fulbright Scholar in the Czech Republic from 1994 to 1996. From 2007 to 2010, he lectured on the European Union at the University of Kansas.

Clicked on used and it listed wrong book

I typed in 8th Edition and when I clicked on used it showed 3rd edition.Not knowing the cover I ended up with a third edition. Wrong Book! It would cost me more to return it than it worth. :(

Glimmer-licious

I had to have this book after watching a Sunday morning TV segment about the author that featured his artwork. After conducting online research and reading about his "inspiration" for his art, I went straight to Amazon and ordered the book. The cover features one of his art prints. The interior pages are filled with a hodgepodge of information, some of which is quite bizarre . . . riddles, math problems, poetry . . . I had hoped that the artwork featured in the book would appear in color, but alas, the pages are black and white. Still, the mere sight of the book has generated some rather engaging conversation, especially after dinner (mood enhanced by a glass of ruby red wine). Like him or not, this author's book is, in my humble opinion, destined to become a collector's item.

Overall, FANTASTIC

Kevorkian basically covers everything in this book. From religion to diets, to art and music. Much like a fellow reviewer, I was disappointed to find that his paintings weren't in color and lacked quality, but their inclusion in the book is, nevertheless, worthy. It is definitely worth the extra $25 to get the hardcover. It's not too thick, but it is definitely long and wide, so paperback wouldn't suit me since I'm a little rough with my books.

A Fun Read!

This is a great book for people who, like me, would love nothing more than to pick Dr. Jack Kevorkian's remarkable brain. This book contains his wonderfully disturbing paintings, papers from the research he did as a young man, dieting advice, philosophical pieces, sheet music of his compositions, and even a short autobiography! And did I mention his trademark limericks? They bring light to the "darkest" portions of this book. The only drawback is since this book was published by an independent publisher (well, of course Kevorkian, being fiercely independent himself, would go through an independent publisher!) in New York City with limited funds, the printing was done at a low resolution and looks pixelated. But no matter. The wonderfully intelligent and sometimes goofy content more than makes up for it, and it's a good peek into one of the greatest minds in the last century.

About the Author
Fran�ois Rabelais was born at the end of the fifteenth century. A Franciscan monk turned Benedictine, he abandoned the cloister in 1530 and began to study medicine at Montpellier. Two years later he wrote his first work, Pantagruel, which revealed his genius as a storyteller, satirist, propagandist and creator of comic situations and characters. In 1534 he published Gargantua, a companion to Pantagruel, which contains some of his best work. It mocks old-fashioned theological education, and opposes the monastic ideal, contrasting it with a free society of noble Evangelicals. Following an outburst of repression in late 1534, Rabelais abandoned his post of doctor at the Hotel-Dieu at Lyons and despite Royal support his book Tiers Livre was condemned. His last work, and his boldest, Quart Livre was published in 1551 and he died two years later. For the last years of his life Rabelais was persecuted by both religious and civil authorities for his publications. His genius however was recognized in his own day and his influence was great.

Dr. M. A. Screech is a Senior Research Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, a Fellow of the British Academy and a Fellow of University College London; he long served on the committee of the Warburg Institute as Fielden Professor of French Language and Literature in London, until his election to All Souls in 1984. He is a Renaissance scholar of international renown. His books include Montaigne and Melancholy, as well as Rabelais and (on Erasmus) Ecstasy and the Praise of Folly; all are acknowledged to be classic studies in their fields.

I thought I had a warped sense of humor

I discovered Rabelais while reading Durant's Story of Civilization. After reading such a strong endorsement I decided to get a copy of his works to see if he was really as good as was described. I've always had a somewhat different sense of humor (I love Monty Python), and have always liked satire; so I thought I would like Rabelais. It turns out I really liked him. Sometimes he was a bit crude for my tastes, but he was hilarious.

In general I liked the first two books more than the later books. They were a little more wild and inconsistent, but a lot more fun. Panurge was probably my favorite character in the first book; in the third book he was a key character, but by the last two books he was a somewhat annoying character.

A quick summary of the books is below. Pantagruel is the story of the birth and early life of the Giant Pantagruel, which was probably the most hilarious of the books. Gargantua is the story of the birth and life of Panagruel's father Gargantua; this was also quite funny covering several topics. The 3rd book of Pantagruel contains two main themes; the first is a discussion between Pantagruel and Panurge on debtors and borrowers. Panurge gives the funniest discourse on the need for debtors I have ever seen. The rest of the book tells of Panurge consulting every imaginable method of seeing the future to see if he should marry. The 4th book is basically a travel log similar to Gulliver's travels where Pantagruel and his friends go on a long sea trip finding many interesting lands. The 5th book is a continuation of the 4th book. Note that the 5th book is of questionable authorship.

As far as the translation goes, I was impressed; but note that this is the only translation I have read. I found the prose very understandable, but appreciated the footnotes where I didn't understand it. The footnotes were also useful to me since I am a neophyte in 16th century French life and culture. Screech did a good job explaining things including the literature Rabelais was referring to.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good introduction to Rabelais. It would be good for many of our modern comedy writers to read these books to give them some better ideas for TV shows and movies. I'm convinced the Monty Python writers must have read Rabelais.

An essential edition

I am truly shocked that there are reviewers here complaining about this edition (tr. M.A. Screech - Penguin). This book is without a doubt a landmark in the publication of Rabelais in English. The translation is very accurate in meaning and yet quite readable. Cohen's was full of euphemisms and Briticisms, not to mention flat-out mistranslations. Raffel's is an anachronistic and groovy retelling - not really a translation at all. Screech's notes ground the work in period context. I found them illuminating. Students of French literature should find them extremely useful. They are easily ignored, if one oddly finds them offensive.

The "dumbing down" mentioned by one reviewer really describes translations which simplify and pretend that an older work is contemporary by using current slang (e.g. Raffel, Mitchell, Slavitt et. al.). This edition should be the translation of choice for years to come and is especially recommendable for academic use.

A disappointing replacement

Just to be perfectly clear, I love this book. It is one of my all-time favorites, providing a humorous and profound take on theology, linguistics, psychology, sociology, literary criticism, and, most importantly, the superior tool for wiping oneself after defecating (according to the young Gargantua, that would be the neck of a well-downed goose). It's basically an obscene pack of Zen koan cards which will delight just about any intellectual type with a decent knowledge of the Western tradition.

However, this edition falls short in a large number of ways. First of all, it's presented as a big, fat, "scholarly" edition, with lots of footnotes, chapter summaries, and aids for the reader to contextualize the information. Not that there's any problem with that in itself - Rabelais is certainly one of those authors that requires at least some knowledge of his intellectual predecessors - but it really disturbs the general flow and feel of the book and places it in the context of being some old and stuffy book read as a "primary source" that can give us insight into 16th-century France than for its own sake. Given that this book essentially ridicules such "old and venerable" texts by means of obscene humor resembling that used by South Park in our modern culture, I really don't think this is the best way to present Rabelais. Also, the books are presented in the order they were written rather than in the traditional order of Gargantua first, then Pantagruel, then the books which are actually numbered. Again, this isn't in itself a problem, except that it disrupts the narrative flow if one wishes to read this book as a whole, starting with the exploits of Gargantua and then moving to the adventures had by his son.

The actual translation isn't terrible, but lacks the flow and subtlety of J.M. Cohen's translation. By contrast, Screech's work feels a bit choppy and as though he's trying to dumb down and explain everything to the reader, rather than produce an English version of Rabelais. Honestly, if I want to be extra-scholarly about everything, I'll just check out a French edition and some of the better books of literary criticism that already exist for this book from an academic library. If I want to read the actual book in my language and not bother myself with the scholarship that's been done on it, this edition won't cut it.

Admittedly, part of my anger at this edition is the fact that Penguin printed it as a replacement to the J.M. Cohen translation, which is widely lauded as the best Rabelais translation in English and is my personal favorite out of all the ones I've read. Thus, the reader is not only presented with an unnecessarily "academic" edition which features a choppy translation, but is unable to easily obtain a better edition or translation (Cohen simply writes a short translator's introduction and then lets the text speak for itself, for the most part). My advice would be to not buy this new and instead try to find a used copy of the Cohen translation. Yes, this means that the copy you end up with will probably not be in as good shape as a new copy of this, but at least, you'll be dealing with a better translation and edition.

something that finally worked

i'm a 40yr old black woman who used prescribed drugs for a good 10yrs of my life. the other years i just accepted the acne and let my skin be. in 2012 i just got tired of the breakouts and began my search for a natural "cure". the first thing i did was change my entire diet. i no longer eat meat, poultry, fish or processed foods. that helped a little bit, but the ACV was the icing on the cake to clear up my skin. i was already using ACV but diluting it to much. the two tbsp with 1/2 cup of grape juice cleared my skin within two or so weeks. i'm using lime juice (what i have on hand now) and honey to see if the spots will now go away. i am grateful and thankful for finding this gem of a book.

Very impressed with results...

I am a 41yr old female who has suffered with acne & cystic acne what seems like all my life. I've tried everything over the counter imaginable, plus countless prescription lotions, ointments and pills. I've had two rounds of accutane, and while these things will temporarily clear me up, it always comes back and usually worse than before treatment. I came across this ebook by accident, & was extremely skeptical, but thought I could always get a refund if it sounded too off the wall or recommended things I couldn't find or afford.

I can't say how glad I am that I read this book & tried the recommended (natural) products. Its been almost 3 weeks since I began, and I cannot believe the difference in my skin. It is pretty much amazing. I keep waiting for it to stop working, but am enjoying my practically clear face for the first time in YEARS. I've recommended book to friends & family and can't wait to see if they try it. Its amazing how much more self esteem and confidence you have when you aren't trying to hide your face!

So I have been following the guidelines of this booklet more or less for about a month now. I decided to quit my minocyclin cold turkey and try these methods the booklet calls for instead. I have to say, I haven't been "cured" but I'm making way more progress with these natural remedies than with my previous pharmaceuticals. My acne turns over much quicker and doesn't leave stubborn scars or dark marks behind. I'm very hopeful I'm on the right path. In addition to the booklet's advice, I have been applying a turmeric paste to my face nightly as well. I'm pleased my skin tone is brightening up and evening out.

Ps- I have a fairly tan skin tone, so I tend to get very dark scarring from the acne, no matter what. This factor seems to be subsiding due to this booklet's advice!
